Lobeline stimulates the respiratory center in the brainstem, relaxes bronchial and smooth muscle tissue, and improves air flow. In high doses, it triggers the vomiting reflex and acts as a purgative during toxic states.
Used for acute asthma, spasmodic coughs, smoking cessation support, tetanic convulsions, muscular spasm, and in some cases, emergency asthma formulas.
Used by Native American tribes for breathing difficulties, muscle spasm, poisoning, and as a general antispasmodic. Often considered a sacred and emergency-use herb.
Administered as tincture, infusion, or topical rub. Dose-dependent: low dose = antispasmodic; moderate = respiratory aid; high = emetic.
Not for use in pregnancy, emaciation, or in those with weak constitution unless supervised. Avoid high doses.
May enhance sedative, bronchodilator, or respiratory drugs.
